Common Composting Questions

You can compost most organic materials including fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, eggshells, grass clippings, leaves, small prunings, cardboard, and shredded paper. Avoid meat, dairy, cooked foods, diseased plants, and pet waste. Our training covers the complete list of suitable materials and ratios for optimal composting.

Timing varies by method. Hot composting produces finished compost in 6-8 weeks with proper management. Cold composting takes 12-18 months but requires minimal effort. Worm composting processes materials in 2-3 months. Our courses teach you how to optimise each method for faster results while maintaining quality.

Properly managed compost should smell earthy and pleasant. Bad odours indicate problems with air circulation or moisture levels. Our training teaches you how to maintain the correct green-to-brown ratio, ensure adequate aeration, and troubleshoot any smell issues that arise. A well-maintained compost system is completely odour-free.

Basic composting requires minimal equipment - just a designated space or simple bin. For hot composting, a thermometer and pitchfork are helpful. Worm composting needs a specialised wormery. We review various options from DIY solutions to commercial systems, helping you choose what fits your budget and needs during our training sessions.

Yes! While composting slows in cold weather, it doesn't stop completely. Cold composting continues year-round at a slower pace. Hot composting can be maintained with insulation and proper management. Indoor worm composting is unaffected by outdoor temperatures. Our courses cover seasonal strategies to keep your compost productive all year.
